Provide Emergency care for suspected spinal injury

 

 

Information about this unit:

This unit covers the competency required to minimise further injury to a casualty when applying first aid and waiting for emergency medical aid. The application of this unit in the workplace covers recognition and management of suspected spinal injuries.

 

The unit is typically relevant for personnel from emergency services and/or volunteer organisations or organisations which provide a first aid service in an environment where there is a risk of spinal injuries.

Prerequisite:

Students must be at least 14 years of age at the time of attendance.

Clothing: We suggest that you wear comfortable casual clothing, as the practical nature of the demonstrations and practice may possibly require bending, kneeling and lying on the floor. Pants and flat shoes are recommended.

 

Target audience:

Those who are required to provide an emergency first aid response in a workplace in an industry with high risk for spinal injury.

 

Prerequisites:

​HLTFA211A Provide basic emergency life support  or

HLTFA311A Apply first aid  (or equivalent)   **copy must be provided at time of enrolment

 

Award Issued:

Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be awarded
the statement of attainment for:

 

  • PUAEME004A Provide Emergency Care For Suspected Spinal Injury

 

Course duration:  

  • Full course: 5 hours face-to-face training

  • Refresher course: 2.5 hours face-to-face training


​Pre Course study options:

There is no pre course study required for this course.

 

Refresher Course:

Recertification recommended every 3 years.

 

To qualify for a refresher course, you must bring a copy of your current certificate  to the training session. You will then be required to:

  • Complete 2.5 hour practical course. 

  • Proof of currency must be submitted to qualify for this course.
     

Important information regarding course durations:

Course durations, are reflective of group sizes of between 4 and 15 participants. If there
are less students in a group, you may find course duration reduced by a maximum of 10%. 
If a class size exceeds 15 participants it may therefore also be necessary to increase course duration depending on the number of participants.

 

The following assessment tasks are required for this course:

20 written answer questions
 

4 practical scenario'covering the following:

  • Conduct a risk assesssment of a scene

  • Evaluate moving a casualty

  • Applying a cervical collar in a diving accident

  • Applying a cervical collar at a hockey incident

  • Applying a cervical collar to a sitting casualty
