Course in First aid management

of Anaphylaxis

 

 

Information about this unit:

This unit describes the outcomes required to assist a person suffering
an anaphylactic reaction until the arrival of medical assistance. Application
of this unit relates to the use of adrenaline auto-injecting devices, (e.g. EpiPen®).

 

The unit covers the recognition, management, prevention and risk minimisation strategies related to allergic reactions and anaphylaxis. It provides the outcomes required to develop and implement a management plan to reduce the risk of severe reactions in individuals diagnosed with anaphylaxis.

Prerequisite:

Students must be at least 14 years of age at the time of attendance.

Clothing: We suggest that you wear comfortable casual clothing, as the practical nature of the demonstrations and practice may possibly require bending, kneeling and lying on the floor. Pants and flat shoes are recommended.

 

 

Award Issued:

Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be awarded the statement of attainment for:

Initial Course duration:  

Mixed Mode: Completion of pre-course study plus 2 hours practical training

​Face to Face: 4 hours face to face training

 

Refresher Course duration:

Mixed Mode: Completion pre-course study plus 2 hours practical training

Face to Face: 4 hours face to face training

Important information regarding course durations:

Course durations, as mentioned above, are reflective of group sizes of between 4 and 15 participants. If there are less students in a group, you
may find course duration reduced by a maximum of 10%.

 

If a class size exceeds 15 participants it may therefore also be necessary
to increase course duration depending on the number of participants.

 

 

Refresher or Recertification of First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis:

Recertification is recommended every 3 years.

 

To qualify for a refresher course, you must bring a copy of your current certificate 
to the training session. You will then be required to:

 

  • Complete the online or downloadable pre-course workbook and attend
    a 2hour practical session.

  • Proof of currency must be submitted to qualify for this course

 

 

The following assessment tasks are required for this course:

Written assessment consisting of 20 multiple choice questions. Respond to these simulated emergency scenarios:

 

  • Provide first aid treatment and administer the adrenaline auto-injecting device x 2

  • Call the ambulance on triple zero (000)

  • Complete a first aid record report

  • Consultation and communication

  • Case study – Risk assessment and management plan
